The Longdendale Housing Society was formed in the mid-1970s and was the inspiration of Philip Dawson FSVA, the senior partner of W.C. Dawson & Son.

The construction was funded by the Housing Corporation (now Homes for England) to develop 50 self-contained one and two-bedroomed apartments for Social Housing catering for the over 55s in the Castle Hall area of Stalybridge adjacent Cheethams Park following the demolition of many rundown terraced houses.

The development was completed in 1974 when the first tenants moved in and following its success, a further development known as The Woodlands was erected in Godley in the mid-1980s consisting of 38 self-contained one-bedroomed apartments again, for Social Housing for the over 55s following the demolition of a former Mill Owner’s house which stood in substantial gardens.
